Art and Design at Singleton Church of England School

“This world is but a canvas to our imagination.” – Henry David Thoreau

At Singleton Church of England School, we believe that Art and Design are vital components of every child’s education and serve as a gateway to communication. Our mission is to help each child reach their full potential across all areas of school life—academic, social, personal, physical, and spiritual. This is achieved through a clearly defined personal creative curriculum that guides students on their educational journey.

Our Vision: To provide children with a wide variety of engaging and challenging opportunities, enabling them to live life to the fullest. We aim to develop a growth mindset, instilling the belief that with God, everything is possible. Our values of love, trust, wisdom, and respect guide us in becoming exemplary role models in our community and the wider world.

Curriculum Intent: Our curriculum is designed to inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent, and create their works of art, craft, and design. As students progress, they develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of art and design. They learn how these disciplines reflect and shape our history and contribute to our culture, creativity, and national wealth.

Curriculum Implementation: We use the Kapow Primary Art scheme, which is crafted by experts to nurture pupils’ talents and interests. This scheme supports the National Curriculum and is structured around five key strands that are revisited in every unit. Our approach includes:

  • Teaching and planning units in six-week blocks.
  • Providing opportunities for pupils to learn and practice skills discretely in “Art and Design” and “Formal Elements of Art” units.
  • Applying knowledge and skills through other units in the scheme.
  • Revisiting key skills with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model.
  • Integrating knowledge of key artists and art movements through practical work.
  • Ensuring lessons are practical, exploratory, and differentiated to include all students.
  • Promoting quality first teaching and embedding creativity and independent outcomes.

Our curriculum covers the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through Key Stages 1 and 2, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive art education for all students. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to develop their artistic abilities and express their ideas, contributing to a rich and vibrant school community.

By fostering a passion for learning and life, Singleton School aims to inspire greatness, ambition, and achievement in every student, helping them to embrace their potential and live without limits.
