History

History at Singleton Church of England School

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): Our children leave the Foundation Stage with a deepened understanding of the physical world, their community, and the wider world. They learn to respect and celebrate similarities and differences, including religious and cultural diversity, fostering a sense of self and awareness of the changing environment.

Years 1-6: We use the Rising Stars History scheme to support teacher workload and ensure a comprehensive history curriculum. This scheme is ambitious, inclusive, and designed to build the necessary knowledge and skills for pupils to become informed and active citizens. It emphasizes historical knowledge, skills, and concepts, encouraging pupils to engage with challenging themes and debates about the past and present.

Curriculum Highlights:

  • Coherent Planning:The curriculum is sequenced to build knowledge and skills progressively from Year 1 to Year 6.
  • Local History Integration:We incorporate local history, such as the Miller family in Singleton and Blackpool’s growth as a holiday resort, to enrich learning experiences.
  • Teacher Support:Rising Stars History is designed for non-specialists, providing core historical knowledge, varied teaching approaches, and quality resources to support effective teaching and learning.
  • Assessment and Progression:We use curriculum coverage, assessment, and progression grids to ensure alignment with the National Curriculum and support mixed-age classes. These grids help teachers plan differentiated tasks and assess pupils’ progress accurately.

Structure and Resources: Each year group covers three units per half term, with complementary units in geography and links to science. The scheme includes session plans, teaching slides, pupil resources, interactive quizzes, and key assessment opportunities to enhance learning and ensure comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum.

Our history curriculum is ambitious and designed for all pupils. It is coherently planned and sequenced to provide the necessary knowledge and skills for pupils’ futures, empowering them to become informed and active citizens in the 21st century. The curriculum emphasizes not just historical knowledge but also skills and concepts, with challenging academic ambitions for all pupils. They all work from a shared starting point to answer the same key questions.

The content provides pupils with a clear understanding of how people lived in the past and what they believed to be important. Within the units, we have identified eight Substantive Concepts: Leadership, agriculture, migration, civilizations, childhood, worship, society, and equality. These concepts help build greater depth in knowledge and skills.
