PSHE: Relationship, Health and Citizenship Education

At Singleton C of E Primary School, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education, along with Relationship, Health, and Citizenship Education, plays a crucial role in fostering the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of our pupils. This comprehensive program equips students with essential knowledge and skills to support their physical, mental, and emotional well-being both in school and beyond.

Our PSHE curriculum is designed to cultivate positive attitudes towards learning, promote a respectful culture, and encourage positive behaviour and conduct. We aim to contribute significantly to the personal development of our children through various engaging and hands-on experiences.

Key Aspects of Our PSHE Program:

  • Community Engagement: We provide opportunities for students to interact with the wider community, including visits from parents, STEM Ambassadors, and other community members.
  • Fantastic Friday Lessons: These sessions offer practical and engaging lessons in Art, Design Technology, Musical Theatre, Enterprise/Citizenship, and STEM, contributing to the broader development of our students.
  • Junior Leadership Team: We encourage students to join our Junior Leadership Team, where they can participate in the democratic process, make decisions, and represent their peers.
  • Buddy System: Older students have the opportunity to mentor and support new Foundation Stage children, helping them to become confident individuals in their new environment.

Relationships Education and Health Education

In today’s complex world, children and young people navigate their lives both online and offline, facing numerous opportunities and challenges. At Singleton, we aim to equip our students with the knowledge and skills to stay safe, healthy, and manage their academic, personal, and social lives positively.

Key Components of Our Program:

  • Healthy, Respectful Relationships: We focus on building the foundations of healthy and respectful relationships, emphasizing family and friendships in all contexts, including online.
  • Mental Wellbeing: Teaching about mental wellbeing is central to our curriculum, addressing the increasing challenges and feelings of loneliness that young people may face. We prioritize children’s happiness and provide them with the tools to care for themselves and seek support when needed.
  • Personal Development: Our program supports the development of resilience, character, and personal attributes such as kindness, integrity, generosity, and honesty. We aim to foster pupils’ wellbeing, helping them become happy, successful, and productive members of society.
  • Goal Achievement: We encourage pupils to believe in their ability to achieve both academic and personal goals, persist through challenges, and recover from setbacks.

While we do not mandate content on financial education or careers, we support high-quality teaching in these areas as part of a comprehensive program. Our approach complements the national curriculum and aligns with the ambitions of the Careers Strategy. Schools are encouraged to integrate this content within a broader PSHE program, building on established, high-quality initiatives.

Supplementary Programs:

To further enhance our curriculum, we supplement our PSHE program with the NHS recommended My Happy Mind programme. This initiative is grounded in the latest science and research, focusing on building positive mental health, resilience, and wellbeing. The program is structured around five key modules:

  1. Meet Your Brain: Understanding how the brain works and how to manage emotions effectively.
  2. Celebrate: Recognising and celebrating individual character strengths to build self-esteem.
  3. Relate: Learning the importance of positive relationships and how to cultivate them.
  4. Engage: Setting meaningful goals and developing resilience to overcome challenges.
  5. My Happy Mind for You: Providing resources for teachers and parents to support children’s mental wellbeing both at school and at home

Our Intent
