EYFS
Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Singleton C of E Primary School
At Singleton C of E Primary School, our goal is to create a nurturing learning environment that supports and enhances each child’s curiosity, confidence, and individual abilities, regardless of their background, circumstances, or needs.
We believe in working collaboratively with parents and carers to foster independent, enthusiastic learners who thrive and reach their full potential. Our Foundation Class is designed to help children begin their lifelong learning journey by developing physically, verbally, cognitively, and emotionally, while also instilling a positive attitude towards school and a love of learning.
Our curriculum acknowledges children’s prior learning from previous settings and home experiences. We partner with parents, carers, and other settings to provide the best possible start, ensuring each child reaches their full potential from their unique starting points.
Our curriculum emphasizes cooperative and collaborative learning principles, focusing on the Prime Areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, and Communication and Language. We believe that high engagement leads to high attainment, so we offer an engaging curriculum with meaningful cross-curricular links and learning experiences. We promote the unique child by providing extended periods of play and sustained thinking.
We follow children’s interests and ideas to cultivate a lifelong love of learning both in and outside of school. By the end of their year in our Foundation Class, we aim to ensure that all children can work collaboratively and independently, with high levels of curiosity and excellent language and communication skills. Our goal is to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed for a smooth transition into Year 1.

Understanding Common Play Behaviours in EYFS
Play is a vital part of your child’s development in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It helps them learn about the world, develop social skills, and build a foundation for future learning. Here are some common play behaviours you might observe:
- Imitative Play: Your child might mimic actions and roles they see around them, like pretending to cook or care for a doll. This helps them understand and process their daily experiences.
- Exploratory Play: Activities such as building with blocks or playing with sand and water allow children to explore different materials. This type of play supports their cognitive and sensory development.
- Constructive Play: When your child builds a tower or draws a picture, they are engaging in constructive play. This helps develop their fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Fantasy Play: Children often create imaginative scenarios, inventing stories and characters. This type of play fosters creativity and language development.
- Social Play: Playing with other children through games and activities teaches cooperation, negotiation, and empathy. It’s essential for developing social skills and emotional intelligence.
- Physical Play: Running, jumping, and climbing are crucial for physical development. These activities improve coordination, balance, and overall fitness.
Encouraging a variety of play types in a safe and supportive environment helps your child develop holistically, laying a strong foundation for their future learning and growth
